Maybe I should xpost to the x.kde group.

Why not post Linux questions here? I like to see Windoze users go "Duh,
duh, duh, what is Linux?" Trying to think of alternative operating
systems makes their brains work too hard and potentially short out. So
post all the Linux, BeOS, Sloaris and MacOS questions you want.

Once in the time each newsgroup had their rules (most still have even if no
one has read them for ages) and one of the main issues was to keep in topic,
the second one is that people using KDE may know more about koffice than
people using microsoft-windows.

If you are interested in KDE, you may be interested in http://windows.kde.org
(see, now we are on-topic on both newsgroups), this allows you to run a bunch
of KDE applications on your microsoft-windows installation, think koffice is
one among those, myself I use LibreOffice instead as I begun once in the time
with StarOffice and then just moved along instead of learning a new office tool.

Yes, I have noticed on the different GNU/Linux newsgroups, we get those trolls
posting how bad GNU/Linux with fabricated statements.

That is really bad, there are dedicated newsgroups for all the operating
systems and you don't want to have a lot of off topic questions, instead
subscribe to a newsgroups which covers the topic you want to ask about and you
will get far better answers when you stay on-topic.

Koffice definitely not there. . No matter, I download andlinux which is
supposed to run under Windows, install it and... ooops it doesn't work. Lots
of quick start icons and desktop shortcuts but none of them seem to do
anything except one which opens a black and silent console/command line
window. Great. Not going to waste time with that. Uninstall.

As a Mac user, I am subscribed to comp.sys.mac.advocacy, and to some of
the Windoze ones as well, for advocating the Mac there. Go to
comp.sys.mac.advocacy sometime and see the trolls who advocate Windoze
and troll in general, and see if they troll you if you reply to them.

There isn't any search function as such, just a list of a couple of dozen
packages, most of them complete dross - a recipe database, IRC client, a KDE
personal finance manager, a karaoke player, a photo gallery manager. I used
to use a good html editor called Komposer which isn't there either. It looks
like the whole KDE on Windows project has been cancelled due to lack of
interest. Is that so?

The "KDE on Windows" project still seems to be active; however, since
most Open Source projects are coded solely by volunteers, it take years
before even a beta is available.

As for "KOffice for Windows," I read a blurb that an alpha was available,
but you have to compile it yourself. And as with any alpha, it isn't
very stable. Right now, as far as I can find, KOffice and/or KWord are
not available as binaries to run natively under Windows.

If you want an alternative to Word, as some suggested, there's OpenOffice
and LibreOffice, both of which are Open Source and free. I personally
use Abiword--also Open Source and free--as a lightweight word processor
on a 10 year old Thinkpad 240X running Windows 2000 Pro. However, if you
want 98% compatibility and mostly interchangeability of files with Word,
OpenOffice is the best choice.

To the basic question "Koffice -is it any good" the answer IMO is no.
I suggest Libre Office instead.
It runs on most platforms and is the latest iteration of Open Office.
