Gateway 2000 CD-ROM; Microsoft Sound System for Windows; Multimedia In General...

Especially to Gateway 2000 Customers,
but also to Anyone Else with Multimedia Experience in General,
I'm new to the "multimedia scene," and would appreciate input, as I
would like to make a "wise" purchase in the very near future. PLEASE
keep your answers specifically relevant to the issues below (i.e., I
DON'T care to hear about how long it took for the order to arrive, how
you can't stand waiting for a human to answer your calls to Gateway
2000, etc., etc. I've dealt with them before, thanks!) :
1) If you are a Gateway 2000 customer and have purchased their
multimedia stuff (including the Sony CDU-31A CD-ROM Drive, Microsoft
Sound System for Windows, and/or Labtech Speakers), I would like to
know what you think about any or all of these components, both pro
and con; BTW, I went ahead and placed an order today with Gateway
for the above, since delivery won't happen for about four weeks.
This should give me adequate time to consider the alternatives based
on YOUR input(s), and I'll be able to cancel the order if needed.
2) Even if you're not a Gateway customer, please make any good
recommendations for a multimedia kit (hardware) and/or CDs
(software) which would primarily be used for, but not limited to,
the enhancement of young (ages 5 to 7) children's interests and
education. In other words, interactive stuff to teach spelling,
math, language, social studies, etc. Also, is there anything out
there especially geared toward teaching children English As A Second
Language?
3) This issue in particular is tricky: I'd like to keep my budget for
both hardware and software just around the $400 range, if at all
possible (okay, you can stop laughing now :-) ); I realize that the
Gateway order is $429 including shipping, but NOT including any CDs.
Again, any and all input to the above is much appreciated ASAP, and I
would prefer that you please post me to the address below.
