I can't find a setting in Windows to change this default font; is there
anything I can do in Windows or DOS to change the font that Notepad uses?

Try changing the fixedfon.fon= line in [boot] section of system.ini to
VGASYS.FON or some other such font in your \windows\system directory.
That should give you proportional spacing in Notepad on a VGA system.
If that or other .fon files aren't in \windows\system, they'll be on
the original Windows diskettes from which you can expand them.

I had the same problem and fixed it the best way I knew. I downloaded
PFE (Programmers File Editor) from cica. It's much nicer than Notepad,
has a toolbar, allows multiple files to be open, supports drag and drop,
... But best of all, it allows you to choose a font. :) I'm very happy
with it.
There's also another decent editor for simple tasks called Multipad. It
was written by MicroSoft as a demo of some internal Windows functions.
I'm not sure if it supports alternate fonts, though.

Will it fix the print problem? I would guess that notepad will simply
use whatever font is in the printer to print.
Correct me if I am wrong.
