SCO TO HOST FIRST GEMINI DEVELOPERS' CONFERENCE AT SCO FORUM

If you are or know someone who develops or is considering
developing UNIX System applications for the enterprise, you
and/or your colleagues should make plans now to be in Santa Cruz,
California on August 22 and 23. In conjunction with its annual
SCO Forum industry-wide gathering, SCO is hosting the "Gemini
FastTrack" developers' program on those dates at the University
of California at Santa Cruz, the beautiful campus at which SCO
Forum is also held.

Developers attending the FastTrack program will receive a free
software developer's kit (SDK) for "Gemini," the merger of SCO
OpenServer and SCO UnixWare expected to ship within the next
several months. Those attending will also become members of the
"SCO Gemini FastTrack Club," which means access to ongoing
software updates, a restricted Web site devoted to Gemini and
other resources. Perhaps most important, developers will be able
to hear from and question SCO's own software architects and
engineers, to get their most detailed questions answered.

The price: $295 for both days, or no additional cost for those
attending SCO Forum. For more information: call 800/SCO-FORUM
(800/726-3678), or browse http://www.sco.com, SCO's Web site. If
you're a UTG member, contact Michael Dortch at +415/386-2867 or
dor...@utg.org) for information about UTG activities at SCO Forum
and the Gemini FastTrack program.

UTG MEMBERS IN THE NEWS I: SYBASE READIES NEW ADAPTIVE DATABASE
ARCHITECTURE

The May 13 issue of "Communications Week"
(http://www.commweek.com) carried a front-page story about the
future plans of UTG member Sybase Inc. According to the article
by Martin Marshall, Sybase plans to enhance its current
relational database offerings with incremental support for new
data types, through the use of "plug-in" helper applications that
communicate via an "adaptive data layer." This approach will
allow integration of other data types whether they reside in the
server hosting Sybase software or elsewhere on a network,
according to sources quoted in the story.

Sybase's so-called "Adaptive Server" will be "more database- and
platform-independent," "able to support PowerBuilder objects, C++
object, Java objects, Microsoft's Active-X components [and]
third-party software such as OLE [Object Linking and Embedding]
/CORBA [Common Object Request Broker Architecture] object request
brokers and CORBA objects," the story added. This means Sybase
customers can expect to see more powerful and flexible company
offerings, perhaps as soon as mid-1997. Contact Sybase
(http://www.sybase.com) or stay in touch with UTG for further
details as they become available.

UTG MEMBERS IN THE NEWS II: HP PREPS WEB-SAVVY DATA WAREHOUSE
SERVER

Our friends at the APT Data Group
plc.(http://www.computerwire.com), publishers of "Unigram.X,"
Client Server News," "UNIX News International" and other industry
journals, recently reported Hewlett-Packard Co is almost ready to
begin shipping offering an data warehousing system integrated
with the World Wide Web. The WebOLAP Server combines an HP 9000
D-200 server with server software from Netscape Communications
Corp., Warehouse for Workgroups from Red Brick Software Inc. and
the DecisionSuite Server with WebOLAP from Information Advantage
Inc. A four-user system with 128MB of memory and 4GB of disk
space will cost $75,000 and ship this month, APT said.

(UTG Members: APT has started some new publications, and is
offering you special discounts. contact Michael Dortch at
+415/386-2867 or dor...@utg.org for details!)

THE OPEN GROUP EXPLAINS IT ALL IN UNIFORUM'S "IT SOLUTIONS"

"IT Solutions" (formerly known as "UniForum Monthly") is
published by UniForum Association (http://www.uniforum.org), one
of UTG's partners in the Open Systems Pavilion you may have seen
at a recent UniForum show. In the March issue, Philip Johnson of
International Data Corp. lamented the confusion and
inconsistencies he perceives in the use and application of
trademarks like UNIX 95 and UNIX itself.

In the June issue's "Letters to the Editor," the lead response
comes from Graham Bird of The Open Group (formerly X/Open Company
Ltd., owners of the UNIX and UNIX 95 trademarks, and Open
Software Foundation). Here's some of what Graham, "the person
responsible for the UNIX brand," according to his letter, had to
say about trademarks and specifications near and dear to our
hearts.

"UNIX 95 (a space and no apostrophe, please!) is the trademark
used on products that are GUARANTEED [author's emphasis] by the
vendor to be conformant with the Single UNIX Specification
[formerly known as SPEC 1170 -- Ed.]. Both UNIX 95 and the Single
UNIX Specification are current names for different things: the
former relates to a product, the latter to a specification.

"... The X/Open brand (in this case, the UNIX trademark) can only
be applied to a product when the vendor guarantees in a legal
contract that the product conforms (and will continue to do so)
to the specification. If a discrepancy is found, it must be
fixed, even if a test has been 'passed.' X/Open does not operate
a certification process.

"... [I]f it carries the X/Open UNIX brand and is labeled UNIX
95, it is indeed a UNIX system. And, if five years down the road,
there is MVS UNIX, Digital UNIX, Reliant UNIX, Solaris UNIX, et
al. and they are all guaranteed to conform to the same
specification, then ... buyers will be happy."

There you have it. You can expect SCO OpenServer, SCO UnixWare
and products based on them from UTG members to comply with these
important specifications and brands. You can also get more
information on these issues directly from The Open Group
(http://www.opengroup.org).

UTG EVANGELISM IN ACTION: NEW WEB SITE, ISV ADVISORY GROUP

As part of our continuing efforts in evangelism, UTG has revamped
its Web site (http://www.utg.org). Now, you'll find details about
UTG's various technical programs, more access to our various
evangelical materials (including "UnixWare/OpenServer Watch!")
and other improvements. Check it out, and let us know what you
think.

UTG has also had an initial meeting of a new ISV Advisory Group.
The purpose of the ISVAG is to provide an informal channel of
communication between UTG's members and ISVs supporting,
beginning to support or considering support of SCO UnixWare and
allied technologies. ISVs who've expressed interested in
participating include Cheyenne Software, Computer Network
Technology Corp., Edinburgh Portable Compilers, Interface
Systems, Progress Software, Ryan McFarland, Tivoli and Veritas.
If you're interested in more information about UTG's ISVAG,
contact Michael Dortch (at +415/386-2867 or dor...@utg.org).

A PERSONAL NOTE

When UTG was "UnixWare Technology Group" and rising from the
former UNIX International, two of the last people to leave UI
were two of the first UTG employees -- Diane Taggart and Dana
Howard. Both of them have been primarily responsible for helping
keep UTG up, running and a relatively sane place to work since
before UTG was officially incorporated. (If you've been to a UTG
meeting, seen UTG at a trade show or visited our Web site, you've
encountered Dana or her consistently sterling work.)

Effective June 10, Dana Howard, Manager, Programs and Events at
UTG, will be leaving to join Information Builders in New York.
She will be a Product Marketing Specialist, focusing on IB's
PC-oriented products. Everyone at UTG, especially me, wishes Dana
all the best in her new position, and wants her to know that she
will be deeply missed.
