What we did was to install an additional disk on the system, and install
V5.1A onto that from the CDROM. Then, we configured the base system to
match our old environment from the V4.0F system disk.

Some random thoughts:

Read the installation guide that came with your software kit; the
upgrade procedure is documented there in great detail.

When we upgraded from 4.0F to 5.1A, we had to go in two steps (via
5.0A I think). There's an upgrade matrix in the install guide
somewhere.

Back up before upgrading.

Some self-installed software such as lsof or top will have to be
recompiled for 5.1.

Same goes for commercial third-party software. Check the relevant
documentation.

hwmgr is your friend. It may not seem so at first, but you'll come to
like him. Start with
hwmgr -view devices
and read the man pages.

Get the latest patch kit and apply that while you are at it.

Google for '4.0F 5.0' in comp.unix.tru64.

Uh, really, your software kit comes with a nice booklet covering the
steps in great detail. If you have specific questions or problems or
would like to hear a few war stories before attempting the upgrade,
just say so.

Well, one hint.

The 5.1 system created from the scratch is not the same as system
created by upgrade path. If you can just install system from the media
and then configure it, it will be the best way, I think.
