sorry for the stupid Q.
Change "i5" to "i0"
Probably won't help, it depends on the platform and machine type.
i5 is power down, i0 is stop the os, two different things but on some
machines, they are the same.
I know i5 powers down on most Sparcs I've used, I think if the guy is x86
he's stuck bonking the power switch at that "type any key to..." prompt.
Like it says in the manpage for shutdown...
state 5
Shut the machine down so that it is safe to remove the
power. Have the machine remove power, if possible.
The "if possible" is the key.

Prior to Solaris 10, there were only a very few x86 systems
which Solaris knew how to power off. From Solaris 10 Beta 6
(actually build 61 onwards IIRC), Solaris can power off most
x86 server systems with working ACPI BIOS. The next Solaris
Express/Beta release of Solaris 10 will add poweroff support
for more x86 systems, in particular many laptops and older
systems (but again, providing they have a working ACPI BIOS).
Oh, and we also just changed that message you saw -- it now
says "type any key to reboot" which should be clearer.
When you see it (the old or new message), it means Solaris
could not power off the system and it is safe for you to do
so at that point. You are issuing the right command, it's
just that the final prompt message was rather misleading.

Forgot to say, this is also in the most recent Solaris 9 update.

This bit isn't in Solaris 9.
