I want to install Opensolaris 8.11 on a Asus eee Box B202 (not a laptop
but a small desktop PC with Intel Atom CPU which I want to use as a
small and energy efficient file server at home). As the machine comes
without an optical drive and as I do not have a system with Solaris at
hand this turned out to be a bit of an effort:
1) Create an Ubuntu live system on an USB stick.
This is quite easy with a working Ubuntu installation on a second
computer and the package usb-creator.
2) Boot the live system and install it to the eee Box.
3) Install Virtualbox 2.1 from the SUN repositories.
4) Boot the OpenSolaris live system within Virtualbox from an ISO image.
5) Install the live system.
6) Follow
<http://blogs.sun.com/clayb/entry/creating_opensolaris_usb_sticks_is>
to create a second USB live media. Basically a two-step procedure
creating an USB image from the ISO one with usbgen and then
putting this on an USB device with usbcopy.
7) Try to boot from this in order to initiate the final installation of
OpenSolaris.
The last step results in a login prompt instead of gdm starting up. I
already found the root passwd of the live distribution. So I can log in
and examine the system. Still X11 working would be
nice. /var/log/Xorg.log shows a problem with memory allocation for the
graphics system. Can anybody here confirm that the Intel GMA 950
chipset does work with the Opensolaris live CD? Wrong BIOS settings?
Any hints on how to proceed further are highly welcome.

Note to self: next time read the Release Notes more carefully prior to
posting...
The workaround described there for the Intel GM965 applies to the GMA
950 also. And just in case some reader is interested: With the
exception of this tweak and the missing module for the WLAN the
hardware support for this box is good: NIC, sound, and USB card reader
are all working. The fan seems to go at full speed, but is still barely
noticeable. With my cheap and not fully trustworthy equipment I measure
14W in idle mode which is better than expected.
