Hi Gurus,

I downloaded 10_x86_recommended patch cluster from sunsolve and
uploaded it to my X4150. The file unzipped OK without any problems. I
attempted to intsall the patch cluster and it all starts OK but bombs
out at patch 119255-77 (third one down the patch order list).

119255-77 seems to be a SunOS 5.10_x86: Install and Patch Utilities
Patch

The error log tells me that I attempted to install a patch that was
already installed however, i am unable to confirm this with showrev.

Is anybody else having similar problems using SUn/Oracle's
10_x86_Recommended patch distribution.

Many thanks in advance
dean

I somewhat recall this patch failing on a system with attached
zones.
Do you have any zones?
If so, from single-user, detach the zones, apply the cluster,
init 6, and attach -u the zones.

What is the preferred way to detach the zones: rename the zone.xml
file(s) and comment the entry(ies) in the index file? Or do you use
another method?

Just patch the global zone only - if the zones are interfering with
the patching, here's how to patch just the global zone
global# patchadd -G patch_id

Here's a shot in the dark, but lets see if this fails:
# cp -r 119255-77 /tmp
# cd /tmp/119255-77
# patchadd -t .

This is the patch and install patch. I remember this series failing if
not installed alone and first.

many thanks for your responses. i finaly got to the bottom of this one
following the most appreciated help of (in no order or preference) :

Bill and John

Problem was due to the location of the unzipped patch cluster. the
patch cluster was placed under /root . Solaris expects patches or
patch clusters/bundles, to be unzipped in /var/tmp. I moved the patch
cluster to /var/tmp and unzipped it. I ran the installcluster script
and it all fired up and started it's patching process.

many thanks to all that shared their knowledge and experiences
patching.

most appreciated,

Just a minor correction for the archives: The patches *can* be unzipped
in directories other than /var/tmp/, but all of the patch files and all
directories in the path leading up to the patch directory must be
readble by the user "nobody" (world-readable).
