i was at home using the java desktop system like any Right Thinking
American (tm)
when i noticed the time was wrong. so i set it w/ the date command.
instantly
the screen flicks over to the "idle timeout screen locked" state. my
video card had
recently blown up so i thought, great, what's busted now? answer:
nothing. since
i set the time about 12 hours forward the instant i hit the return the
system saw that
i'd been idle for 12 hours. so the screen timed out.

i got a giggle out of it.

Have you considered configuring NTP? That should automagically keep
your clock set to the right time. You will require servers that know
what the correct time is but there are hundreds of publicly accessible
NTP servers. It will not do much for you if you shut down your desktop
system when you are not using it! If you leave it on, you can stay
within milliseconds or even microseconds of the correct time.
