I know some versions of Solaris ship with GNU versions of 'make' and 'tar' in
/usr/sfw/bin. Does anyone know when that first started? I do not believe that
was a new thing in Solaris 10, but perhaps it was.

I'm looking to put a note in a script, telling people where they might find gnu
tar and gnu make on their systems. If I know its in /usr/sfw/bin only on Solaris
10, then I'd do a test and suggest they look there only if they are running
Solaris 10.

/usr/gnu/bin/tar

on OpenSolaris 06/2009 seems to exist. Is a directory /usr/gnu quite a recent
thing or not?

I don't have a Solaris 9 system to check, but I don't think
/usr/sfw existed on Solaris 9. [Certainty level not high though.]

Solaris 8 doesn't have /usr/sfw. I think it came in Solaris 10.

This is a feature of OpenSolaris. The default PATH puts /usr/gnu/bin in
front of /usr/bin, to the delight of some and dismay of others.

Checked my notes: /usr/sfw/ appeared in Solaris 9 FCS, and had SUNWgtar,
but not SUNWgmake. The latter was added in Solaris 10 FCS.

Thank you everyone. I'll stick an appropriate message only on Solaris 10 in that
case.
