cadp160_IobSpecial: cadp160_poll_request timeout
cadp160_IobSpecial: cadp160_attach_PAC_request timeout
After repeating these messages few times kernel didn't recognize
anything connected to SCSI bus even after reboot. We had to physically
disconnect power supply to cure this state.
When we disconnected tape drive we were able to install Solaris
normally. But if we connect the drive again, we get same messages as
above and Solaris won't boot again. :-(
System configuration: Intel P4/2,4GHz; S845WD1-E; 3x Quantum Atlas 160
36GB; Seagate Scorpion 40 DDS4 drive; Solaris 8 with recent recommended
patches cluster applied.
Does someone use similar DDS4 drive successfully in Solaris 8 x86
environment?

No problems here when I originally installed Solaris 8 4/01 in June 2001
with HP DDS-4 tape drive and Adaptec 39160/2940-U2W adaptors on X86.
Which release of Solaris 8 are you attempting to install?

according to uname, it's 5.8 generic_108529-18.
Peter
By release I mean the date of the release. For example, the initial
release of Solaris 8 was in March 2000; that would be Solaris 8 3/00 and
my initial Solaris 8 install was Solaris 8 4/01. I installed Maintenance
Update 7 last year so that brings my install patch level to Solaris 8
2/02. It should indicate the patch revision level on the CD label.
BTW, I re-read your OP and it seems to imply that your tape drive is on
the same SCSI bus as the system disks. Is this correct?
If my assumption is correct, this is not good practice. Having a tape deck
with slower access time (40 Mb/sec) sharing the same SCSI bus as Ultra 160
disks (160 Mb/sec) negates the whole point of having Ultra 160 hardware.
The SCSI bus will only function as fast as it's slowest component (tape
drive at 40 Mb/sec).
Please note that my HP DDS-4 tape drive and CDrom drive are the only
components connected to the Adaptec 2940-U2W SCSI controller. The U160
Seagate Cheetah system hard disks are connected to the Adaptec 39160 Dual
U160 SCSI controller. Therefore my recommendation is for a second LVD SCSI
controller for your DDS-4 tape drive. This should resolve your
installation problem.
BTW, the Adaptec 2940-U2W SCSI controller uses the cadp driver and the
29160/39160 series of Adaptec SCSI controllers use the cadp160 driver.
Add following line to /kernel/drv/st.conf and reboot the system.
"SEAGATE DAT 06240", "Seagate STD-240x 4mm DDS-4 DAT", "SEAGATE_DAT",
The drive is working well for these years with Solaris8.
HTH.

Oh, sorry but it will not help boot problem.
Did you try changing the Adaptec bios to make it run slower than
160 (like 40MB/sec or 20MB/sec)

it's Solaris 8 07/01 AFAIK... So I guess it should support DDS4 drives.

yes

hmmm, doesn't SCSI host adapter negotiate speed with each device
separately?

yes, it's certainly better configuration and I will try it. Thank you
for advice.
