If you want to _dial into_ these systems, no problem. Any terminal emululation
program will allow that. Be sure to get one with HP emulations as HPUX is
picky about non-HP emulations. If you want to _run_ these OS, I sugguest
you take your medication and go back to your room...

Look for RS/6000 Model 850 at http://www.rs6000.ibm.com/ in the hardware
sections. This is a PowerPC notebook running AIX.
You can also run Solaris/2.5 for x86 on nearly any Intel-PC notebook.

<< Marcin Cieślak // sa...@sgh.waw.pl >>
In this case, just forget HP.
Their notebooks are simply Intel-Based machines, the actual
revision of HP-UX (10.20) only runs on PA-RISC CPUs.
No emulation.
In spring, somebody working at HP told me, that they intend to
bring out a portable workstation, but i never heard of afterwards.
And, i think, it would be a little bit H(igh)P(riced)

The IBM offering, the Thinkpad 860 was recently discontinued and is on
discount. There may or may not be a replacement AIX laptop from IBM.
The 860 only had support under AIX 4.1.5. I tried a numer of times to
get 4.2.1 running but was unsuccessful.
BTW, if ANYONE out there has managed to get 4.2.1 running on their 860
laptop, I''d appreciate hearing EXACTLY step-by-step how you did it.
The Solaris laptops are available from a number of sources including
www.tadpole.com who also make Alpha based laptops.
Solaris/Intel will run on many of the better Intel laptops, but you have
to be careful that the laptop hardware is pretty 'PC-Generic' and
doesn't do anything 'fancy'.

The necessary action is not necessarily the right one.
I was surprised to see an HP/UX (PA-RISC) notebook on RDI's web
site (www.rdi.com) along with their UltraSPARC notebook.

Are you trying to say that there doesn't exist such a beast or that the
ones that do exist are not worht the trouble/price ? Because someone
mentioned RDI (http://www.rdi.com/) and they seem to carry such
things. Not sure how good (or bad) they are though, so we'd really
appreciate the help here.
Thanx again.

It's nice to be important, but it's more important to be nice.
I think it's called N30.
The only problem is that it's working with a special version of AIX 3.x
I'm not sure they made a newer version of AIX for that notebook.

RDI makes laptops for both the Solaris and HP-UX environments.
They can be reached via http://www.rdi.com/.

SPARC laptops are available from RDI and Tadpole (www.rdi.com and
www.tadpole.com) RDI currently holds the "Sexiest Hardware" title with their
200mhz Ultra-I based laptop with a 14" screen. Their older Hypsersparc models
can be had for a (relative) song. For something more portable, with a higher
"kewl" factor, check out the Tadpoles. They have a killer magnesium case for the
models with the 10" screen, and the IBM-style pencil-eraser pointer thingy. They
currently top out with the 175mhz HyperSPARC.
RDI also offers a 175 mhz PA-RISC based HP laptop, with optional graphics
acceleration.
Tadpole has a 233mhz Alpha-based notebook that runs either VMS or Digital's
Unix. (Ultrix? DEC-UX? OSF/1? Who knows? Any rich Linux hackers wanna take a
stab at porting the video driver? Have I mentioned how awesome the Tadpole
magnesium case is?)
IBM makes Power-PC (133mhz 603e) based AIX notebooks.
I actually used Tadpoles (SPARCBook 3), and found them to be, if anything, a bit
more reliable than our desktops. Nice, bright 800x600 active matrix screen.
Abandon all hope of running for a reasonable amount of time off the batteries,
tho. It also requires a special build of Solaris (provided by Tadpole), and a
set of utilities for the notebook-centric stuff. I also dealt with a very old
RDI luggable, and found their tech support, even for obscure, obsolete models to
be excellent.

I believe in the November Byte, New Products section, there was a
mention/picture of a UNIX lap top.
