Hi,

We've got a load of Fujitsu Primepower 850 SPARC (running Solaris 8
initially) that we will be migrating our mission critical trading
infrastructure onto. Prior to starting the migration we need to stress
test them as heavily as possible for a sustained period of days to
ensure all memory/CPU is working flawlessly & that cooling in the racks
they are mounted in is adequate when they are under these loads (as
they will be consistently once we start using them in a production
environment).

Has anyone got any suggestions on good Solaris SPARC specific tools for
the above task (& perhaps views on potential caveats with testing boxes
in this manner)?

I figure some of you Sun Engineers reading this will have some
significant insight into this process?

Many thanks,

Conor

There are an "oficious" tool from oracle, called 'orion', that can help
you.

Not is an official tool, and not is specific for Sun, but it's powerful
for IOs tests.

I think this is the page:
http://www.oracle.com/technology/software/tech/orion/index.html

Cecilio M.

Not sparc or solaris specific, but useful nevertheless;

Bonnie, if you want it simple

http://www.coker.com.au/bonnie++/

IOzone, if you want it more detailed

http://www.iozone.org/

I've found both to be very handy.

I've found that running several (a couple per CPU) instances of bonnie++
concurrently, with different file sizes in endless loops to be a very
effective stress test.

First of all since you are going to use it to trade think of how your going
to use it then abuse it that way.
Run distributed.net parses different keys to bruteforce encryption
While benchmarking run your application in a solaris zone to reflect how
your application performs in a zone while system is under heavy load
scp massive files and wget multiple files. (load up that ip/stack)

Dont forget work your way up so that you can ensure you have good cooling..

Mission critical set up a few zones running your testing migration to ensure
zones work well for your application and have a good setup. Also you might
find zone config A is better than B and C although less feature rich is more
responsive. Also with a zone you can test your redundancy and scalibility
while your system is in a hostile condition.

How about using Sun VTS, assuming your boxes are supported?
