news/ won't go!

I removed the news from our server. I rm'd -r starting at
/var/spool/news.

However several directories rufuse to go away. I've tried all I could
think of

rmdir <directories withing /var/spool/news>

gives me a message that *device is busy*

Please advise what this Unix plebe is missing.

Execute a "mount" or "df" command. I suspect your former news
spool [or part thereof] was on a separate file system and you
are trying to delete a file system mount point. If that is the case,
kill any processes still using the file system, then unmount it
and remove references from /etc/vfstab.
