Does anybody know why Sun changed the name of /etc/fstab to /etc/vfstab
when migrating from SunOS to Solaris? This change seems to be gratuituous.
Are there technical reasons for it?

vfstab = virtual file system table, I suppose because it's not just for
local file systems anymore and includes network file system mounts.

Because that's the name of it in SVR4 unix (upon which Solaris2 lays
its foundation). Same thing for the /etc/rc*.d directories, ttymon, etc.

Well, that alone doesn't explain why the name was changed.

The most important reason for changing the name was the fact that
the syntax of the file changed.
