Because that's the name of it in SVR4 unix (upon which Solaris2 lays
its foundation). Same thing for the /etc/rc*.d directories, ttymon, etc.

Well, that alone doesn't explain why the name was changed.
The most important reason for changing the name was the fact that
the syntax of the file changed.
