Hi!

While trying to install bash-2.03 on a solaris 2.6 Ultra5-System,
configuration runs well, but "make" fails after a while with fatal
error:

---------------------------
sh: cr: not found
make: fatal error: Command failed for target `builtins/libbuiltins.a´
---------------------------

Can anyone help me ????

Regards
Friedrich

Why don't you just get the binary at http://www.sunfreeware.com ? Just
make sure to download and install (using pkgadd -d) the gzip package
first. Beats having to compile it from scratch.

Obviously $(AR) is not set for some reasons ;-)

Maybe you mean ar, not cr?
in which case you need to temporarily add /usr/xpg4/bin to your path
cos ar lives there.
PATH=$PATH:/usr/xpg4/bin

If you get this like I did:
cr libbuiltins.a builtins.o alias.o bind.o break.o builtin.o cd.o
colon.o comman
d.o common.o declare.o echo.o enable.o eval.o evalfile.o evalstring.o
exec.o exi
t.o fc.o fg_bg.o hash.o help.o history.o jobs.o kill.o let.o pushd.o
read.o retu
rn.o set.o setattr.o shift.o source.o suspend.o test.o times.o trap.o
type.o uli
mit.o umask.o wait.o getopts.o shopt.o printf.o getopt.o bashgetopt.o
make[1]: cr: Command not found

Probably in the Makefile (that you created with a ./configure)
AR =
should read
AR = ar
probably this happens cos ar is not in your PATH when you invoke
./configure
=>
PATH=$PATH:/usr/xpg4/bin
export PATH

correct me if I am wrong but I thought the latest version of bash for
solaris 2.6 was bash 2.02
bash 2.03 is for solaris ver 2.7
I strongly believe in that fact but again, correct me if I am wrong here.

Actually, 2.02 is the latest Sun Freeware precompiled version for 2.6. The
latest BASH version (if you download the sources and compile yourself) is
2.03.
