My sparcstation is hard drive space challenged, so I did the end user
install of Sol 8 to conserve space. Now that I need to add more packages I
downloaded from the web , I find I cannot use 'gunzip' command to uncompress
them. If I had a fast connection, I would just redownload them, but I am on
56k (got the packages while on a friends fast dsl connection).

I have no clue on how to get the gzip/gunzip utility to install from the
Solaris software cd's without redoing the whole Solaris installation
(again). Any advice on an easy solution to this problem would be
appreciated.

Thank You,

John Gooch

gzip is in the SUNWgzip package (perhaps not surprisingly :-)

You can just install that.

No, you don't understand. Which software cd should I put in the cdrom drive,
which folder do I go to to start the install of the package....

My search of Software cd1 revealed one folder containing "gzip" and it was
//product/virtual/sunwgzip , but that was just a text file with referenced
to different paths on the hard drive (like /bin...). Not much help.

Insert CD 2 of 2, cd to the Solaris_8/Product directory and run
pkgadd -d . SUNWgzip

Thanks, I made it to that directory and was stuck since there was an install
folder but not ./install_package or whatever file. However , on typing the
pkadd command, I get "pkgadd: not found:. I wonder why Sun makes it so hard
to install their software, why not have it so I type "install" and it
installs? Oh, well, I am hunting for pkgadd in the bin directories,
hopefully I will find it.

I found pkgadd in /var/sbin and got gunzip installed. Its actually from
1993, which seems pretty old to me. So far it says all my images are
corrupted, so I am redownloading them to see if they are really corrupt or
if gunzip is too old.

more to come.

It is pretty old. It won't handle large files, and it has some errors
that can make it dump core. You might want to try the latest test
version of gzip instead, as it has those bugs fixed.

Excuse me? pkgadd is in /usr/sbin, which is normally in root's PATH.
Since you cannot run pkgadd without being root, this means you are doing
some odd things on your machine.

At any rate, I suggest you might want to do a pseudo-reinstall:

start with "CD 1 of 2", and instead of doing a straight install, it should
give you an "upgrade" option.
Pick that, and then select all packages when it asks you about customising
packages.
