I have no clue on how to get the gzip/gunzip utility to install from the
Solaris software cd's without redoing the whole Solaris installation
(again). Any advice on an easy solution to this problem would be
appreciated.

gzip is in the SUNWgzip package (perhaps not surprisingly :-)
You can just install that.

Oh! I've said too much. Smithers, use the amnesia ray.
My search of Software cd1 revealed one folder containing "gzip" and it was
//product/virtual/sunwgzip , but that was just a text file with referenced
to different paths on the hard drive (like /bin...). Not much help.

Insert CD 2 of 2, cd to the Solaris_8/Product directory and run
pkgadd -d . SUNWgzip

It is pretty old. It won't handle large files, and it has some errors
that can make it dump core. You might want to try the latest test
version of gzip instead, as it has those bugs fixed.

Excuse me? pkgadd is in /usr/sbin, which is normally in root's PATH.
Since you cannot run pkgadd without being root, this means you are doing
some odd things on your machine.
At any rate, I suggest you might want to do a pseudo-reinstall:
start with "CD 1 of 2", and instead of doing a straight install, it should
give you an "upgrade" option.
Pick that, and then select all packages when it asks you about customising
packages.
