I recently grabbed the quake.xil file at idsoftware.com to run Quake on
my Solaris 2.6 machine. The machine is a SS5 with 64MB RAM and a TGX
framebuffer. I launch Quake out of openwindows.

It is so slow, that I can't even really play. I am use to quake on a
Linux machine which is extremely fast, not matter what video card you
use. Is there a different version of quake or a different way I should
launch/run quake in order to get better performance? or is Solaris quake
really just not a playable game?

It is indeed a playable game. However, a SS5 is just a tad too slow
for enoyable gameplay. Try it on an Ultra instead.

We play Quakeworld on a mixture of SS4 and SS5 (110MHz) every lunch time
and it plays just fine. You have to have a small window and have the
server on a free machine, but it plays OK, and we still forget to
blink...

Stu.

I found quake for Solaris. The only problem is
that the mouse doesn't work very well.

Is there is fix or something that I need to set up?

I have the mouse bound to the quake window, but when
I use the buttons at the same time that I'm looking
around (with +mlook) the movement doesn't work if
any of the mouse buttons are held down. I have a
grapple that I bind to the mouse3 button. When I
grapple, say to the ceiling, I need to hold down
the button and look around at the same time. This
setup works fine on a PC, but doesn't on the Solaris
version.

Any help will be appreciated.

Thanks,

Joe

for Solaris?

Thanks

1/ host: ftp.idsoftware.com
dir: idstuff/unsup/unix
file: quake1.09-sparc-sun-solaris2.5.1.tar.Z

and extract "quake.xil".

2/ Get the files "pak0.pak" and "pak1.pak" from a PC version
and put them in a directory named "id1" at the same level
as "quake.xil"

the "id1" directory will store your config and saved games
The pak[01].pak are huge ( ~50 MB ) so it's a good idea
to share them with your friends/colleagues by making
symbolic links.

Happy hunting,

Mamy

Of course now that Quake 2 is out and I've played it, I can't
go back to the original quake ;)

This is what Id suggest you do, so you have to have paid for something
to play the game.

The other, *free* option is to go download a PC copy of the Shareware
version, get yourself a Unix LHA decompressor (not hard to find - Archie
for LHA) and extract the pak0.pak file from that.

You only get the first, shareware levels, of course, but it's enough to
be going on if you don't already own Quake.
