I have a SPARC 20 running Solaris 2.5.1.
What creates the "initpipe" and "utmppipe" files in the /etc directory?
I suddenly saw these
appear in this directory and their access time changes with the system
clock. Is anyone familiar with this scenario? Thanks.

init creates initpipe and utmppipe is created by utmpd.

ps -p "`fuser /etc/*pipe`"
/etc/initpipe: o
/etc/utmppipe: o
UID PID PPID C STIME TTY TIME CMD
root 1 0 0 Jul 13 ? 0:30 /etc/init -
root 289 1 0 Jul 13 ? 0:00 /usr/lib/utmpd
