Hello. Maybe someone can help me with this. I have a SparcBook 3GX and
included with it is a 1.2 Gig 2.5" drive. The SparcBook FAQ at
www.sunhelp.com says that there are converters available that will allow you
to replace the small SCSI drive with a higher capacity IDE drive.
Supposedly, the converter simply fits on top of the 2.5" 12.5mm IDE drive
inside the drive sled. Any information that can be given to me about
acquiring one of these adapters and about their relative performance would
be greatly appreciated. Thank you.

Sincerely,
Wes Hofmann

A company in Australia has IDE-to-SCSI card for sale(
www.blackfire.com.au/ide2scsi.html) which I believe is
made by a Japanese company(
www.iodate.com/Products/OEM_Prod/Interface/IDSC20_Board/idsc20_board.html).
Judging by its dimension, It probably won't fit into the SB3 HDD sled.

I heard that there are several hundred SB3GX out there,
if all those SB3GX owner all want one, maybe we could
talk the Japanese company into making something that
will fit. Well, just a thought.

The SparcBook FAQ I mentioned
(http://www.caiw.nl/~hvdkooij/SparcBook-FAQ/sparcbook-faq.html) states that
at least one person has successfully gotten a 6.4GB IDE 2.5 inch drive to
work in the SparcBook 3GX and that it is a fairly "simple" thing to
do....assuming that you can find the converter for it. Supposedly, there is
one out there that will fit into a SparcBook's drive sled. Any ideas as to
where I might find out about it?

The following are excerpts from the aforementioned FAQ:

21. Can I use PC IDE notebook hard disk in my Sparcbook?
Yes and no. The SB uses SCSI drives, however, there seems to be a company in
Japan that sells an IDE to SCSI converter. It is a 4.5mm high card that fits
on top of the 2.5" IDE drive. Some Apple notebooks use this converter.

.
24. Can you upgrade the tadpole's maxed-out 2GB drive to something a bit
larger?
So it seems. Just pop the drive & converter assembly out of the caddy, move
the converter to a new 2.5" 12.5mm IDE drive, reassemble the caddy, pop back
in and format!
Worked fine for IBM 6.4 (IBM Model DADA-26480 4200RPM 13420 Cyl+2Alt 16 Hd
63 Sec) with new install of SOLARIS 2.6 with above-mentioned patches... No
reason to think larger drives would not work...

Thanks!

Most of the SPARCBook-3GX units recently available on the used market
came with 1.2GB IBM SCSI drives. It seems though that a very few had 2GB
IBM IDE drives with the scsi adapter cards on them. As far as I can
tell visually the SCSI shell and internal SCSI flex connector is
identical for the 1.2GB and 2GB style shells, so it really should just
be a matter of finding the SCSI-IDE adapter cards. I can't see any
manufacturer info on the adapter card while it's still attached to the
drive, however if and when I more fully disassemble it, I'll see if
I can determine anything more about who makes it.

In my case, I found the 2.0 GB Tadpole drive assembly on the used
market, though they seem to be quite scarce.

I got an ide to scsi converter off of an Apple Powerbook 1.0GB 2.5 Inch scsi
drive that I bought for $125 off of the Mac groups. I was able to swap the 1GB
ide drive for an IBM 4.6 GB drive, and I have used it succesfully with Solaris
and Linux on my 3GX.
