I'm not a Solaris newbie, I'm a nobie. I have never worked with Solaris, but
I recently bought an Ultra Sparc 5, that has yet to arrive here.
I'm curious about the different versions. I see Solaris 2.6 mentioned a lot
here. But then I also see Solaris 8 and 9 mentioned. Isn't Solaris 2.6
stone-age compared to 8 or 9? I know that for stability/support reasons many
people still use slightly older versions of different software, but 2.6
seems a little too old.
Can someone please explain the Version numbering? I would be very interested
in that.
Thank you for your time.

This is a good (not quite up to date) list of what the various version
numbers translate to between SunOS and Solaris:

Here is a list of some feature differences between the versions:

To understand the "version numbering" you first have to realize that
everything SUN does is about cash. SUN had a crappy operating system
called SunOS which was a more BSD-ish version of the UNIX operating
system. A few years ago they decided to wake up and move to the SysV
model. The problem is that everyone who works at SUN is a moron. The
marketing idiots decided to still call the SysV version "SunOS" but to
call the SysV version bundled with the utilities necessary to make it
work, "SOLARIS". SUN calls "SOLARIS" an "Operating Environment" (i.e.,
an OS plus utilities). Then, just to shit on their customers some more,
after SOLARIS 2.6, they decided to drop the "2." and call the next
release "SOLARIS 7" (it was a lame ploy to appear to be an ORACLE
partner). Now they are up to "SOLARIS 9". Below is the breakdown.
OS OE
SunOS 4.x SOLARIS 1.x
SunOS 5.4 SOLARIS 2.4
SunOS 5.5 SOLARIS 2.5
SunOS 5.6 SOLARIS 2.6
SunOS 5.7 SOLARIS 7
SunOS 5.8 SOLARIS 8
SunOS 5.9 SOLARIS 9
No doubt in the next year or so SUN will come up with a new
nomenclature for no reason.

No problem.
Hope this helps,
