sendmail group writable directory errors

what do these errors mean:

sendmail[26517]: NOQUEUE:
SYSERR(root): /etc/mail/sendmail.cf: line 80: fileclass: cannot open
'/etc/mail/local-host-names': Group writable directory

Not necessarily, AFAIR. The OP might be confused by the fact that
/etc/mail/ isn't group writable, not knowing that the error actually
means that all directories in the path leading to the file must not be
group-writable. So he has to check / and /etc as well.

If you have little or no experience, many things are not obvious. In
the Unix family of operating systems, especially, brevity seems far more
important than obviousness!
