You're right; it's /etc/rmtab. Apparently this file can get "out-of-
date", ie, there isn't necessarily a mechanism to clean out the old
entries. (_Essential System Administration_ by Aileen Frisch agrees
with this; she says you should copy /dev/null onto the file
occasionally to clean it up.)

Thanks,

When I reboot my machine (runs SunOs 5.5.1), I get error messages of
the following type:

rwall: Can't send to hostname
hostname: RPC: program not registered

Eventually, it will ignore whatever this is that it's unhappy about,
but it slows down the reboot.

Most of the hostnames it's mentioning don't even exist anymore (well,
the IP address might still live in the domain name lookup table, but
the hosts are long gone). What configuration file do I need to remove
these names from?

Maybe you are trying to mount NFS file systems (in /etc/vfstab) that don't
exist any more? If so, remove the entries.

/etc/rmtab

Read the /usr/sbin/shutdown script, and the showmount and rmtab man
pages for more insight.

As other mentioned, see /etc/rmtab.

The performance problem is fixed in 2.6 so this is much less of an
issue.
