Two questions:

1 - when lp'ing a file to a remote printer, why doesn't the file delete
from the lp spool right after printing is complete. I am sending files
to a printer that has a Fiery rip. When I look at the spool
(var/spool/tmp/systemname) I see the files #-0 and #-1 long after the
job has completed printing. Eventually these files are deleted, but I
can't figure out the timing.

2 - does anybody know of a book or good writeup on lp in solaris. I
would like to know all the relevent files, programs, directories, and
commands.

Even better question is:

What future can be expected for /usr/bin/lp in future
versions of Solaris?

I understand that 2.6 went to a SunSoft designed printing
subsytem which is based on BSD agian. Does that mean 'lp'
will disappear? or will continue to make sure both front
ends work?

The reason I ask is that I use (or would really like to use,
if I could make it owrk right,) the '-o option' to lp which
lpr doesn't seem to have a good equivalent to.

I say 'if I could get it to work' because while it works
fine on the machine which is the print server, the options
never seem to get passed from the client work station to the
server correctly.

Specifically I'm trying to use the -o duplex option on a
client to send files to a server which has HP's jet direct
software installed. The server then sends the file to
the printer over the net. -o duplex works great on the server
but it won't work on the client.

I've asked both HP and Sun Tech support about this, they both
point fingers at each other. Has anyone else experienced this?
Putting the JetDirect Software on every machine is not an
option -- The install would be a hassel, and I would end up
with hundreds of queues to manage instead of 1.

Thanks
Kyle

I had success under 2.6 by using the "Solaris extensions", like
this (printers.conf):

picasso:\
:bsdaddr=printsrv,picasso,Solaris:

On your server, edit this file:

/etc/lp/interfaces/model.orig/printerqueuename

Change:

duplex="def"
to
duplex="vduplex"

(vertical duplex)
