CLIENTHOST problem in xdm Xresources

I'm having a strange problem. I just set up a Sparc 5 running Solaris 2.3
Edition II. I have it configured to run xdm on the main console. I changed
the Xresources file so that the hostname would be displayed in the message
like so:

xlogin*greeting: CLIENTHOST * Systems Alternatives, Inc.

Of course, CLIENTHOST is supposed to be replaced by the hostname of the
machine when the login box is displayed. Well, on the Sparc 5 it isn't
being replaced - it just says "CLIENTHOST * Systems..." on the screen.
This is really strange, because I have done this countless times before
on other systems, and it has worked fine. I have even done it on a Sparc
IPC running Solaris 2.3. This is the first time I have done anything with
Solaris 2.3 Edition II, however. Is there some new bug in Edition II?

Thanks.

I had the same problem on my Solaris 2.3 station and found, that /usr/ccs/lib/cpp
was not installed.

The Xresource file will be loaded using xrdb. Xrdb will run /usr/ccs/lib/cpp to
replace CLIENTHOST (and others).

I think you must install the software package containing the cpp.

with my decalpha running osf1.2, i have /usr/ccs/lib/cpp installed
