I am trying to get hold of the Arial font to test a print out of a
postscript document but do not have an Arial font in .afm format, does
anyone know where I can get it. If all goes well I may end up buying it.
Otherwise, can anyone tell me if they know of a way of converting Windows
P.C fonts into font files (.afm) which can be used on Solaris 9.

Thanks

"R.B" <rich....@bt.com> writes in comp.unix.solaris:

AFM files are PostScript font metrics. Solaris can also use TrueType
files directly, which most Windows & Mac fonts are in these days - for
example, /usr/openwin/lib/X11/fonts/TrueType/ has Arial in TrueType
format.

Solaris can also use Microsoft's Arial Black font family which looks
very nice in web browsers (these are _excellent_ fonts). These are
again .ttf TrueType files, and are free, however you have to get them
yourself off your licensed copy of Windows

The easiest way to get Arial for postscript it to download the free pdf
reader acroread from Adobe. An Arial font (type 1) comes with it, and can
be used fine with any postscript printer.

I don't think it is the .afm file you want, though. That is used by
products which _generate_ postscript to get the width of characters. It is
possible to generate a .afm file from the font if you really want one.
