Hi All,

I have a problem which I think you may have seen it before.

When restart the server using "reset /SYS" and then connect to console
using "start /SP/console" I don't see any output I only get this

-> start /SP/console
Are you sure you want to start /SP/console (y/n)? y

Serial console started. To stop, type ESC (

I didn't install Solaris 10 x86 yet and I need to see console o/p and
GRUP to start installing Solaris!

Can anyone direct me how to solve this issue?!!

Thanks,
Saoud

This is because it's an x86 machine, and by default it will use a
PC-style console which you can get at with the web interface to ILOM.
There is some incantation to make it mirror this onto the serial
console, which I expect is covered in the ILOM manual for x86 systems
somewhere, but I don't know what it is.

I forgot to mention that even Web GUI doesn't show anything,,, I
worked on x4200 servers before and the default behavior was normal not
like this time.

does the computer have a monitor attached? This can make garbage PC
servers from sun (all of them really) switch the console to the monitor
and keyboard, at which point you may or may not be able to even connect
with ILOM and the retarded gui.

Sun doesn't know WTF they're doing when it comes to stuff like this.

Do they have the same and latest firware? It's not uncommon for a "new"

Had a T5120 arrive here that didn't even support LDOMs correctly as the
firmware was too old. I'm not sure how that rev even shipped at all.

Anwways if that doesn't work, it may be time to have sun replace the
thing.

Guys,

Problem has been fixed by SUN engineer that inserted a jumper in the

Thanks

I recall the x series PC machines tend to not show anthing over ILOM if
there is a monitor (or maybe keyboard) attached to the server.

Yeah, it makes no sense, but sun never understood remote management unless
it involved serial consoles.

Because it's a shaped after a normal PC, the hardware really wants to
have some form of graphics.

The BIOS can also be configured to use a serial console, but in that
case it just copies whatever is displayed on the console as text to
the serial port until the OS is booted and it takes control from
the serial port.

Before the system has completed booting, the remote console
can be used (using the webserver on the ILOM) and it gives
you access to the console.

(Now the first message seems not to have arrived here so I'm not
sure what the actual problem is; the boot process for x86 has
changed a lot since the case of the Device Configuration boot.

That's the problem. Sun is making normal PCs, not servers. A PC doesn't
require a monitor or keyboard to boot correctly. Somebody at sun decided
that is one is attached, to not use the remote version of the actual
console (keyboard and monitor). It doesn't help that they use GRUB which
is screwy, as was their original boot loader for the x86 stuff.

I had to pass all sorts of -B or something like that flags to grub through
grub.conf to get solaris to even work on a x series machine.

It was such a hack to get solaris to run on sun machine x86 machines we
sent the demo unit back and called the trial worthless.

I've tried this before, with solaris and FreeBSD. The problem was there's
period of time where the boot loader pops up and only talks to the
console, not the serial port. Assuming the OS boot correctly, redirection
to the serial port works, but that's not always the case with a machie
that's down, which is why you're trying to talk to it from the console in
the first place.

the changes are to confusing to follow, and there's no way to search for
"give me the most current docs on this subject" from oracle either.

They still have the completley wrong and worthless "sun blueprints" guide
to PXE booting out there last time I looked. It's got to be 5 years old or
more.

BTW:
- if you want see bootmessages on ILOM
and console not working after update opensolaris to xvm-3.4.1 (snv_134)
then read this:
