I've had installpatch give an error 5 which I don't understand and I've
had it give an error 8 which means a required package isn't installed.
I know for a fact that it is. The patch I am trying to install fixes
the big ping problem. My Solaris 2.5.1 systems have ping and are
configured for TCP/IP so I really need this patch, but one gives an
error 5 and one gives an error 8.
This patch is the first one in the current Recommended.tar file for
Solaris 2.5.1.
Any ideas?
Thanks
Jay
I reinstalled the OS (Solaris 2.5.1 on a SparcStation 20) and now when I try
to install a patch, I get:
# ./installpatch .
Checking installed packages and patches...
Generating list of files to be patched...
Verifying sufficient filesystem capacity (exhaustive method)...
Installing patch packages...
pkgadd: ERROR: checkinstall script did not complete successfully
pkgadd: ERROR: unable to rename </var/sadm/pkg/.save.SUNWcsr>
The installation of patch 103630-09 was interrupted.
Installpatch needs to be re-invoked to ensure proper installation of the
patch.
Backoutpatch is terminating.
Installpatch is terminating.
I get this if I use the -d or not.
Any ideas on this one? I've checked permissions and diskspace and both look
good to me. I'm running this as root, the machine is plugged in.... :)
Thanks
Jay
Precisely this happens on different Sun's systems -
Sparc 5, Sparc 10, Sparc 20, E3000 with UltraSparc when you try
to apply Solaris 2.5.1/Solaris 2.6 patches (I didn't try earlier OS'es)
_DOWNLOADED_ from SunSolve Web site either in Recommended Patches batch
or individually.
However, they've done just fine off SunSolve CD.
There are no such problems with Solaris x86 2.5.1/2.6.
Local Sun people still keep quiet regarding this situation.

Make sure your umask is set to 022 before you unpack the patch. Sun
patches will not apply properly if your umask is set to 077 (which I'm
betting yours is).

umask 022 when unpacking patches is not enough.
Patch directory should be readable for world,
this means that all above directories should have rx permission
for "others".
Just wondering if it's mentioned somewhere ?

The error 8 is for that the patch you are /trying) to install is it for a
package that isnt installed on your system... (for example a patch for sun4m
if you are on a Ultra-Sparc etc etc)
If you gets error 5 its because of that pkgadd failed.. check that the
directorie is exacutable and writeable (some patches seems to requier that
the disk is mounted -rw if imported via nfs)
