Installing Solaris without Booting CD-Rom

I've installed Solaris any number of times, but it's always
been of the nature of

ok> boot cdrom

I've attempted to install Solaris from a "boot server", but I
gave up on that idea a long time ago.

Here's what I'd like to do:

1. Put the Solaris 2.5.1 CD into a neighboring machine on the
network with a very fast CD-Rom player. (It takes forever to
read from a 2X CD-Rom!)

2. Copy all of the appropriate installation files to a spare
partition on the target machine.

3. At a later date (such as when everyone's gone home), install
Solaris from the spare partition.

I suppose this would be something similar to setting up a
"Jump Start" on the machine, the way they usually come from
the factory.

Is this do-able? Other suggestions? Or should I just bite the
bullet and suffer thru the 2X CD-Rom? (I've bitten the bullet
before, and believe me, it's not at ALL tasty!)

Thanks in advance!

I attempted to do this with a Linux machine as the install server, and
almost succeeded. Using a Solaris machine as the install server is easy
(at least for me as I now have experience). You can read my notes at:

Hi Chris

I trying to install Sollaris 7 on a Sparc 10. As a Install Server I'm using a SGI
Indi with a attached CDROM. I've followed step by step your html
document and now I'm struggling on the part where you describe the
entries in the /etc/bootpatams file. I've started the "rpc.bootparamd
-d" command (the Irix doesen't know the -r and the IP option, but to be
sure I've tried them too) and I've created the /etc/bootparams file.
I've experimented with different entries and also with the same as you
described in your file. (I'vecreated the shared directories and I've
shared the CDROM too)
Here some details:

(On the ss10)
ok boot net
rebooting....
Server IP address: 192.168.1.3
Client IP addree: 192.168.1.5
RPC timed out
No bootparam (whoami) server responding;

Indi# arp ss10
ss10 (192.168.1.5) at 8:0:20:12:41:5 permanent published

a snoop on the Networkport on the Indy tells me:
BROADCAST -> (broadcast) RARP C Who is 8:0:20:12:41:b ?
jorix -> ss10 RARP R 8:0:20:12:41:b is 192.168.1.5, ss10

jorix -> 192.168.1.255 UDP D=138 S=138 LEN=191
ss10 -> BROADCAST BPARAM C WHOAMI? 0.0.0.0 (retransmit)

I must addmitt I'm not familiar with BPARAM. Furthermore I find it very
suspicious I' not getting any debug message of the "rpc.bootparamd -d"
in the xterm window.
I would be very happy if you can find some time to reply.

Thanxx very much
