Is anyone in this group running 5.06 and if so, how does it compare to
5.05 and 5.04? Is the licensing different - on 5.05 and 5.04 (and 5.00)
you can use the same keys?

I'm running it for the last two weeks. It has some extensive differences
in the console driver, and some nifty new utilities.

You license it the same way as any other prior version: get your upgrade
license and install with it.

An InPlace Upgrade from 5.0.5 was *almost* to my liking, but I still
recommend a fresh installation.

David,

I just installed it. It seems to have better hardware support
for large hard drives, modems, etc. You don't have to apply
all the 5.0.5 patches and it comes with the SKUNKWARE
2000.

An identified message followed by more unidentified messages doesn't

Well... I'm sorry about that. I wish I could be more informative. It happend
very quick and I had just the time to read 'bad end of file' . I guess the
following errors were the consequence of the first one. All these file
permissions could not be set and finally the installation failed and I had not
another choice than reboot. After rebooting none system was installed. and the
partition was not accessible. How do you want me to find a protocol about this
failed installation. If I had some., I would post it.
I installed version 5.05 and 5.06 exactly the same way. My hardware has nothing
rare nor bizarre. I'm running almost all operating systems on this box and
I choosed the most simple and compatible available components . I started
checking the news right away after my failed installation and I didn't find
anybody reporting a similar problem. That's why a broken CD would be my guess.
I know uninformative posting are as much annoying as unresollved problems. I
will retry an installation on a blank HD one of this day and try to read more
details on the screen. I doubt that pressing PAUSE would work at this point.

OK, here's the story as detailled as possible :

While 'Setting file permissions...' , the following error occures and
displays the message :

-- Compress : Error : Bad decode table

Then a quite long list of warnings generated respectively by chmod,
chown and chgrp trying to access a bunch of files :

-- chmod : WARNING : cannot access
/hdFS/opt/K/SCO/SoftMgr/1.0.2b/custom/custom.tlib : No such file or
directory
-- chown : same thing ...
-- chgrp : same thing ...

I could notice the first four files by pressing PAUSE. But then I had to
reboot.
They are :
/hdFS/opt/K/SCO/SoftMgr/1.0.2b/custom/custom.tlib
/hdFS/opt/K/SCO/SoftMgr/1.0.2b/custom/custom.tndx
/hdFS/opt/K/SCO/SoftMgr/1.0.2b/custom/wserverterm
/hdFS/opt/K/SCO/SoftMgr/1.0.2b/custom/ccsTools/ccsLog

But like I said, there are many others.

These files are in the CPIO archiv /opt/archives/VOL.000.003. I could
read its content (under Windows with Visual PAX) without problem. I also
extracted the first file 'custom.lib.Z' and ungziped it successfully.
But I cannot figure out how I would do it manually for the whoole
installation.

I tried making a copy of the 5.06 installation CD and installed from the
copy. I had to try anyway, even if it was obvious that such a trick
would not work. I got the same error and the same failed installation.

That's all for now .

Did you get the exactly the same error at exactly the same place? If so,
that might indicate a bad cd. If the error moves around, then more likely
it is a hardware issue.

I've got a machine that puked similar errors trying to install the
complete SkunkWare cd but the errors moved around and the packages installed
individually. This machine has installed 5.0.6 many times however the cd
drive in that box isn't the most reliable and that it where I'll look when
I get time to swap drives.

It would be interesting to know if you have an EIDE or scsi cd drive.

You originally commented on something about a bad script.

>OK, here's the story as detailled as possible :

Bad decode table. So the file is not being uncompressed and the
files aren't being extracted. The long list of warnings such
as these:

>
>Then a quite long list of warnings generated respectively by chmod,

No such file or directory - because the bad decode table mean that
the the file was not extracted.

Windows! Are you sure you didn't corrupt something in a transfer.

I wouldn't say that 'it was obvious that such a trick would not
work'. Perhaps there is a problem on the original CD.

I tried to install about 6 or 7 times, always the same error at the same
place.

This machine has 2 CD drives (one of them is a CD writer) . And of course, I
ran the installation from both. Same error.

I know, I'm sorry about that.
After the error occured, the screen continued to scroll down with warnings for
1 or 2 minutes, until I got to read that the installation failed.
I couldn't read the original error message entirely until I waited for it and
pressed PAUSE quickly.

I was able to read the CD, extract a file from the archive and read it under
Windows.
That's all. Nothing to do with my installation.

Anyway it didn't work either whith the original nor with the copy.
I should say that I would have preferred to have some problem reading or
burning the CD.

How could a Windows program (even if it's a good one) read the archive
entirely and 'compress' screw up the installation because of a 'bad decode
table' ?

Well , both IBM-DPTA-372050 UDMA 66 on classic IDE cable. I disabled UDMA 66
(flashing the drives with an IBM tool) , since the mainboard doesn't support it.
So the drives run in UDMA 33 mode. It is normaly not a problem ... normally.
I could install almost everything, including OSR 5.05 and Solaris 8, even
OS/2 (which is traditionally difficult with harddisks).
Hmmm .... Am I really going to deactivate DMA completelly in the BIOS and try
again ?...

Installs seem to be more picky than running the system. You could
try disabling the DMA until the install completes, and then
set it up after testing to make sure all is well.

I'd go for the better cable - the big differerence is that this
cable looks more like a scsi cable - eg grounds for each data
instead of one for all and all for one [Dumas of course].

I have some installs where I've had to turn off caching in the
BIOS, and other performance additions until the install completed.

Thank fully I haven't had to do that for a few years but that
was almost de rigueur at one time for SCO OSes on picky systems.

Do you know the archive was read correctly on the windows machine?
Checksums match, etc? Have you moved that file to a Unix machine
and tried uncompressing outside of the install?

Is there a Windows utility like the unix 'sum' which can
be used to compare files on Sco and Windows?

I may be able to recreate your problem.

Try this:
Mark down *exactly* where the install fails and try again using:

boot: defbootstr wd.udma=off

Post your results.

Sum doesn't compare files. It gnerates a checksum. If you want to
compare files, Unix provides cmp and diff.

And if you want to compare text files on Unix and Windows, such a method
wouldn't do you any good because of the difference in line endings.
Comparing binaries makes no sense ab initio.

That being said, can't one compile mc5 on Windows?

Hi Tom !

It fixed my problem. Thank you very much.
Here are my results :

- The installation of SCO OSR 5.06 (unlike OSR 5.05) failed on ASUS P5A-B with ALI
M1543 I/O controller (support only UDMA 33) and IBM-DPTA-372050 IDE HD (UDMA 66
disabled with IBM flasher, allthough it should not be necessary but I did it for more
compatibility and simplicity)
- The error occures while setting files permissions ... displaying the message : '
Compress : Error : Bad decode table ' since the archive /opt/archives/VOL.000.003
could not be expanded properly.
- I repeat the installation 5/6 times and got always the same error at the same
place, so that I started to worry about a damaged CD.
- Fortunately I could free a partition on another machine : GiGabyte GA-5AA with ALI
M1543C I/O controller (support UDMA 66) and WD 102AA IDE HD ATA66 on ATA66 IDE cable,
and on that one the installation completed successfully.
- Finally, I disabled UDMA mode in the Bios and, following your advice, tryed
another installation on the first machine, using the bootstring :

boot: defbootstr wd.udma=off

It fixed the problem.
After the installation, I reenabled UDMA in the BIOS.

Thanks again,
