Hello,
I'm running SCO Unix OSR5.06, and VisionFS 3.10.911.
I use to connect to this pc via a term emulator from a Win98 SE machine.

I recently installed the internet connection on the SCO box, and it
seems that the 'named' daemon has been activated (am I right ?)
When I try to telnet from a Win machine the login prompt is very long to
came (I can see that on the Cisco router, which is the gateway for all
my network, the internet connection start to search (I suppose) the SCO
machine. when the internet connection close, then the login prompt
appears).
If I do it after stopping then named daemon, the prompt comes
immediately.

So could you explain to me why the Win's machines (I don't use any hosts
file on Windows) search all the network to find the SCO machine ?

Thank's.
(I hope my explantions are clear !)

Hi !

The Internet Manager interface is well known to screw the

/etc/resolv.conf

file up; in fact, if you look at it, you should see something
similar to

hostresorder local bind
nameserver 0.0.0.0

Of course, the IP is not that good and so the "resolver" routines
time out while contacting the "fake" name server machine.

If you're NOT using a DNS box, either remove or rename the above
file.

The reasons behind the telnet which slows down during the login phase
is due to the fact that the telnetd server tries a reverse-lookup
of the incoming machine IP address; if you have a badly configured
DNS configuration, this procedure fails after a timeout.

Hope this helps !

Best,
Roberto
