A project nearly a full decade in the making, ARES Nevada LLC has finally moved the first shovelful of dirt to kick off construction of its brand new energy storage project, the ARES GravityLine, located right here in the Pahrump Valley, with an official groundbreaking ceremony hosted on Thursday, Oct. 8 in honor of the occasion.
Originally planned to straddle both Nye and Clark counties, with the bulk of the system to be located in Clark, the project was recently redesigned for a more compact footprint on ground that has already been disturbed by construction activities. Rather than building on 106 acres of untouched Bureau of Land Management lands, the ARES GravityLine will now be located at the Gamebird Pit off Highway 160 just west of Carpenter Canyon Road, a gravel mine operated by local company Wulfenstein Construction.
As detailed on its website, the project will encompass roughly 20 acres and include a fleet of 210 mass cars, which are essentially train cars situated on a closed set of 10 multi-rail tracks. These cars will act as batteries, providing a storage solution for the electrical grid.

Finalizing local permitting, the yearlong construction phase of the project is expected to begin late late this year on 20 acres at the Gamebird Pit, a working gravel mine in Pahrump. ARES has selected Potelco, a Quanta Services company, as the EPC contractor. The facility will create approximately 30 direct jobs during construction.
That project, called ARES Nevada, will consist in a 5.5-mile track traveling up an 8-degree slope, covering 106 acres of public land near the delightfully named town of Pahrump, Nevada. It will boast 50 MW of power capacity and be capable of producing 12.5 MWh of energy. The company expects to start construction early next year and finish by 2019.
Medium-sized ARES projects (50-200 MW) will provide both ancillary services and short-term storage, roughly two hours' worth. While the former smooths out minute-by-minute variations in wind and solar, the latter can smooth out longer (hourly) fluctuations.
It will be close to the airport, private jet hangers and the planned Brightline West high speed rail station, which connects Las Vegas to Los Angeles. Developers anticipate the project being a first stop for Las Vegas visitors.
While Oakland is loath to make its general fund liable for added costs, it is looking into a limited obligation bond, which would be repaid with taxes on hotel, sales, and parking revenue generated by the project.
A new home field is projected to generate $79 million in annual revenue from naming rights, concessions, sponsors, merchandise, parking, and events, while an additional $40 million will come from areas around the venue including offices, a convention center, and an entertainment complex.
