Samba has been comptabile with Openserver 5 as far back as I can
remember.
Dave
I'm a lot more familiar with unix then I am with linux. I'm wondering if
there are any differences for compiling this on sco then there would be for
linux? I've got a normal default install of sco open server 5.0.5 on this
thing.

Lots of people run samba on OSR5. I'm guessing there's probably a
precompiled version of it available for download somewhere on SCO's
Web site.
The VisionFS link is probably due to the fact that VisionFS came
bundled with OSR5, since before the SCO breakup that saw the operating
systems sold to Caldera, both OSR5 and VisionFS came from the same
company (SCO).

Say hi to my cat -- http://www.stevedunn.ca/photos/toby/
Look at the Skunkware "OpenServer packages" off this URL:
SAMBA 2.2.5 is available there as a 'tar' volume and once extracted is
installed as root via 'custom'. This is what we are using for all our
SCO OpenServer 5.0.5/6 customers with need for SMB networking. I do
strongly recommend that you upgrade your OS505 to OS506. Lots of fixes
in OS506.

I don't have a licensed developer system which it is evidently requiring to
compile.. I'm wondering if somebody can compile this for me, or make the
custom media stuff, and email it to me. I guess if not then I will load up
the vision fs instead.
thanks,
Jeff

Jeff,
If you are willing to have someone compile it for you, then you must not
want any customization, so why don't you just use one of the several
skunkware versions on SCO's site
(ftp://ftp2.caldera.com/pub/skunkware/osr5/vols/)?
If you really want to compile it yourself, I don't think you need the
licensed developer system, I think you could probably use gcc which is also
available on SCO's skunkware site.

Actually 5.0.6 has problems compiling Samba after you install the 5.0.6a patch.
The error you get is:
"include/includes.h", line 872: error: identifier redeclared: initgroups
*** Error code 1 (bu21)

I see no such error at all.
I just compiled samba 2.2.6 on OSR 5.0.6 (fully patched) using gcc
compiled from yesterday's 'cvs update' of gcc source code, and had
to type only 'configure' followed by 'make'. Nary a hitch.

Interesting. I didn't say anything about compiling SAMBA. I said to
get the tar volume that can be installed via 'custom'. I have
installed SAMBA 2.2.5 on OS5.0.6a using 'custom' from the VOL.* files
with no problem.

Good luck finding the latest versions of Samba compiled. The skunkware site is
out of date and I always have problems finding recent versions. I did finally
switch to the gcc compiler which works with 506a.
Gary
I'm confused. I THOUGHT that SCO was going to switch out Vision in
favor of Samba starting real soon now- is that not going to be the case?
If so, one would think a binary port on Skunkware would be a no-brainer..

It sure is a no-brainer. Skunkware is NOT out of date, and
has Samba 2.2.6 (released 23 Oct) as of yesterday 31 Oct.
