We rebooted our system on friday night and now, none of the gettys
(other than the console) will start. These are running across a
computone terminal server. The computone is initialized correctly and
I can actully cat info to the terminals, but the gettys will not
start. When we tried to start a getty, we got the following error:
/etc/getty /dev/ttys00 9600 (Friday Jan 29 21:05:49 1999), PID 946:
/tcb/lib/initcond child (PID 947) exit status 0x1100
Everything seems all right and I regen'ed a kernel to make sure it
wasn't corrupted. I've run integrity and authck to make sure that
everything is OK, and it seems to be.
Also, we've noticed that telnet'ing in take a long time for the prompt
to come back. But, once in, it is very fast.
Any help appreciated. Is it possible that the system is waiting on
something to start and it isn't??

Did you "rebuild the environment" when you rebuilt the kernel?
Perhaps Technical Article 104239 applies.

That's often a DNS problem.
PLEASE remember to state which Release and Version of UNIX you are

Yes, I rebuilt the kernel environment (/dev/tty2A was back).

Sorry, we are running SCO OS 5.0.5
Thanks for the help, I will look at TA 104239.

I read 104239, and what is says to do I checked on our system and
everything is fine, but I don't know if there are differences in 5.0.5
and 4.0/4.1.
There are not errors in /tcb/files/initcondlog nor on the console are
getty.

Folks,
I found that /etc/rc2 -a was still running. So, when I killed it, the
gettys started. What would be hanging this?? The networking stuff
possibly??

Hi !
Sorry for jumping in but did you try by running "custom -v|-V" to
check if your system is "consistent" with the database built at
installation time ? Please consult custom(ADM) to get additional
info about the use of the -v (or -V) flag.
Hope this helps !
Best,
Roberto

Well, according to your initial post, your console gettys were running.
Unless your inittab is in very strange shape, those gettys are the same
as your serial port gettys, and if rc2 wasn't finishing, they shouldn't
have been running either.
/etc/rc2 is marked "wait", which means that init waits for it to finish
before continuing on. One of the places for it to hang is /etc/idrc.d,
and there are ta's referencing that, but darned if I can find them this
morning! If I remember right, that relates to SMP machines, though.
Anyway, if you can't find the ta's and if you do have scripts in
/etc/idrc.d, you can "fix it" temporarily by running the stuff within
there in background.
Are you sure that you had console gettys? That just doesn't make
sense..
