Welcome to the SCO Advanced Hardware Supplement (AHS) Release 5.2.0

_____________________________________________________________________________

Thank you for using the SCO AHS Release 5.2.0. The SCO AHS
program will continue to provide new hardware support for your
SCO operating systems through a number of channels.

This file contains:

o a contents listing of the current directory

o instructions for accessing the AHS Release and Installation Notes
and other AHS documentation

o instructions for downloading AHS software

o updated notes and known limitations

o a list of supported devices

NOTE: AHS Release 5.2.0 allows you to install only the drivers you
need, which will significantly reduce download and installation
time. Rather than installing the entire product, you can install
single drivers or technology parcels (containing all drivers of a
technology type).

This file contains information about the complete AHS product. If
you are installing Network, Video, or Mass Storage products only,
go directly to their respective subdirectories for information
specific to those technologies. See the AHS Release and Installation
Notes for more information about ``partial installations''; that is,
about installing single drivers or technology parcels.

AHS Release and Installation Notes and other documentation

_____________________________________________________________________________

We recommend that you read the AHS Release and Installation Notes to
familiarize yourself with installation procedures before downloading
and installing AHS products. PostScript and plain text versions of
the release notes are located in the same directory as this README file.

The AHS Release and Installation Notes are also available online in
HTML format after installing AHS products. We recommend that you
read the AHS Features and Limitations HTML online document using ScoHelp
after installing AHS products but before configuring AHS drivers. The
complete online AHS Documentation Set is installed by default when you
install the entire AHS product, and is available from the online SCO
Documentation Library when you invoke ScoHelp.

NOTE: If you are installing boot-time loadable drivers (BTLDs) for
your root disk controller, we recommend that you read the manual
page for your driver before installing. PostScript and ASCII
versions of the BTLD manual pages are located in separate
subdirectories.

_____________________________________________________________________________

Downloading AHS software

_____________________________________________________________________________

To download the entire AHS product, transfer the VOL.*.000 media image
files to your local machine according to the instructions in the
``Downloading AHS components'' section of the AHS Release and Installation
Notes.

NOTE: Do not change the names of the media image files. Doing so will
prevent installation.

If you want to use a BTLD driver at installation time, transfer the
appropriate BTLD disk image (btld_135dsk.dd for 3.5" floppy disks,
btld_96dsk.dd for 5.25" floppy disks) according to the instructions in
the ``Creating a BTLD disk'' section of the AHS Release and Installation
Notes.

AHS notes and known limitations

_____________________________________________________________________________

The following notes and limitations supplement those listed in
the online AHS Features and Limitations document:

o We recommend that you bring your system to single-user (system
maintenance) mode before installing or removing any AHS Release
5.2.0 driver.

o AHS Release 5.2.0 includes new support for the SNI Matrox Millennium.

o The AHS Release and Installation Notes describe a known limitation
with the Software Manager on SCO OpenServer Release 5.0.0 systems.
You might encounter problems under two scenarios:

- When removing AHS software, the removal procedure may fail with a
``fork failed'' error message.

- The Software Manager prevents Host to Enterprise System upgrades if
AHS Release 5.2.0 is installed.

You can correct these problems by applying Support Level Supplement
SLS OSS408B, an SCO-supplied patch. To acquire the patch, download it
from SCO Online Services or contact your SCO Support Services provider.

o The AHS Release 5.2.0 network driver for the 3Com 3C590 adapter
will fail at startup when used with the newer 8K ``FIFO'' adapters.
The following 3Com model numbers are affected:

3C590-Combo 03-0046-010
3C590-TPO 03-0046-110

To resolve this problem, a new 3C590 driver will be available
from the SCO Online Services site. When the driver is available,
download it following the instructions in the AHS Release and
Installation Notes.

The older 32K adapters are not affected by this problem.

o ATI Mach64 ISA/VLB adapters using DRAM memory will not run using
16M colors in resolutions greater then 640x480. Do not select
these modes. If your ATI Mach64 ISA/VLB adapter uses VRAM memory,
and has the required amount of memory, all 16M color modes will
work correctly.

o If you want to remove AHS Release 5.2.0, you must take special
precautions if you are using one of these host adapter BTLDs:

- Adaptec AIC-6x60 chip sets (smad driver)
- Advanced Micro Devices AMD host adapters (ams driver)
- BusLogic SCSI Host Adapter (blc driver)
- Symbios Logic 53C810 and 8xx series host adapters (slha driver)
- Tricord 4-bus host adapters (iiop driver)

DO NOT remove the entire AHS Release 5.2.0 or the Mass Storage
component. If you do, you will remove your root disk controller driver
when the kernel is relinked and the root drive will be inaccessible
after rebooting your system.

Rather than removing the entire AHS Release 5.2.0 product, select a
partial removal, and remove any Release 5.2.0 components EXCEPT the
root disk controller driver.

If you have already removed the Mass Storage component and relinked
your kernel, you can recover by booting the UNIX kernel that was
created by default at installation. To do so, enter ``unix.safe'' at
the boot prompt. When the system comes up, reinstall the Mass Storage
driver you need and relink the kernel. For more information about
booting an old kernel, see Chapter 10, ``Starting and stopping the system''
in the SCO OpenServer Handbook.

NOTE: If you are using the smad host adapter BTLD supplied with AHS
Release 5.2.0 and you remove this driver, the older spad driver
will be used in its place. Some host adapters based on the
Adaptec 6360 chip sets may not work with the spad driver.

The Sjk SCSI jukebox driver is also subject to this problem, although
it is not boot-time loadable. Other mass storage drivers included in
this release will be replaced with older drivers if the Mass Storage
Component is removed.

o Chapter 3 of the AHS Release and Installation Notes explains how to
restore software after removing AHS Release 5.2.0. If you are restoring
graphics or network driver support on a localized system, you will also
need to restore language support for these components. After completing
step 5 of the procedure in ``Restoring software after removing AHS
Release 5.2.0'':

1. From your distribution media, select the appropriate language
support for the currently installed SCO OpenServer Release 5
system (recorded from the main window of the Software Manager).

2. Specify a Partial installation, then restore:

- Graphics Drivers by expanding ``SCO OpenServer Graphics
local language support'' and selecting ``Graphics Drivers''.

- Network Drivers by expanding ``SCO OpenServer Connectivity
local language support'' and selecting ``Network Drivers''.

3. Click on the Install button. The Software Manager will install
just these two components, restoring your system to the original
SCO OpenServer Release 5 local language versions.

Then, reconfigure your network and graphics software as directed.

o AHS Release 5.2.0 does not provide the ScoHelp online search
facility for graphics and network adapter-specific information.
To access this information from the online AHS Documentation Set:

1. Select ``AHS Release 5.2.0 Features and Limitations''.

2. Select ``Supported video adapters'' in ``Chapter 1: Graphics drivers:
features and limitations'' or ``Supported network adapters'' in
``Chapter 2: Network drivers: features and limitations''.

3. Select ``adapter-specific information''.

4. Select the adapter(s) listed on your system.

Online searching is enabled for other AHS documentation.

_____________________________________________________________________________

Supported devices are listed below by manufacturer for:

o video adapters
o network adapters
o mass storage devices
o multiprocessing devices

NOTE: Device drivers for listed chip sets are certified to
manufacturers' reference circuitry. However, SCO drivers may not
work for supported chip sets in all hardware implementations.
If you experience problems with a particular chip set, contact
