Sorry for this newbie question:
Can KDE + GNOME co-exist under (Suse) Linux ?

Are both part of the Suse Linux package or do I have to install one of them (which?)
seperatly later?

How do I switch from one GUI to the other?

Yes.

SUse normally installs KDe by default, but you can also install Gnome
through Yast if you wish.

Choose the session type at login from the Kdm screen.

Yes, no problem.

Yes, both are included and both can be installed
simultainously. You do however need to choose
one of them as your default.

When you are about to log-in into your graphical
enviroment, you can sepcify which session you
want to run (in one of the menues/drop-downs).

Usually it's the "default" (which is whatever you
chose at installation), but you can also specify
others; like KDE, GNOME, IceWM and others.

It's (probably) also possible for a user to edit his
or hers startup-files and specify another default
GUI than the system-wide one.

You can also log-in in "Failsafe" mode, which
usually gives you an xterm, but no windowmanagers.
>From that terminal, you can start whichever
windowmanager or windowenviroment you like... you
may even kill one and start another without terminating
your session. But be careful not to close/exit the
xterm, or your session will end. Killing your WM will
also clutter your screen pretty good before you start
another one...

+++

Finally, you may use startx or xinit to start a x-session
manually, and may specify what windowmanages/desktop-
enviroment you'd like to start.

E.g. to start IceWM on the 2nd graphical terminal (F8) (where
the 1st (F7) already is occupied by the graphical log-in screen),
at the prompt write:

$ xinit /usr/X11R6/bin/icewm -- :1 >& /dev/null &

Hope this help,

Yes, you have to install the one that you didn't choose first time
around. Typically, you are more likely to have chosen KDE on your
initial install since IIRC (up to and including 10.0) this choice is
offered first in the install list.

If you chose KDE first time around then to install Gnome under SUSE
Linux 10.0, follow these steps:

1 Ensure that your install medium (DVD/CD/Network) is in place

2 From the Menu, select System -> Yast
and enter the root password when requested

3 Choose Software Management

4 In the "Filter" drop-down menu, select Selections

5 Check the box next to GNOME system

6 Click on the Check Dependencies button and resolve any conflicts

7 Click the Accept button

8 Mount any requested CDs

9 Sit back and watch it install

Use the Session Type on the bottom left hand side of the log in screen

Suse normally uses KDe by default but you can easily add/use Gnome via
Yast.

Select the 'session' type when you login via kdm.

Most installers allow you to select which packages you want
installed.

> How do I switch from one GUI to the other?

There may be a menu entry. Otherwise, logout and log in with the
one you want. If you use gdm as a display manager, there is a
session menu under which you can choose the system you want. Other
DMs presumably have something similar.

Why? It's a Linux question.

>Sorry for this newbie question:
>Can KDE + GNOME co-exist under (Suse) Linux ?

Yes.

>Are both part of the Suse Linux package

Yes, as are others.

>How do I switch from one GUI to the other?

First, you can run a GNOME application under KDE and a KDE application
under GNOME. Second, K Menu -> Switch User -> Start New Session will
allow you to log on to a new session using whatever desktop you want;
there's an equivalent under GNOME. The new session can be for the same
userid as the existing sessions.

If you've already got multiple sessions going, you can use K Menu ->
Switch User to switch among them. --
