Just a quick question about ftp. I have recently set up a .netrc file
for the various anonymous ftp servers I use often. My question is
this: Is it possible to create an alias for the machines so that I
can stop having to type in the entire machine name to open? For
example,
ftp> open oak
or
whitten@ponder% ftp oak

and it would open a session to oak.oakland.edu...

Note: I would like an option that works both at the command line and
in interactive mode.

Thanks,

Marc.

this is not an exact answer to your question but it will solve your
problem. I suggest you get ncftp. It keeps a memory of what ftp
sites you've conncted to and where you were in them. it works both
on the command line and in interactive modes really cool
you can also grab another prog which will give you command line history
capabilites, extremely cool.
ncftp can be found at:
typhoon.unl.edu:/pub/ncftp
read the faq and help stuff in that directory it'll give you more
details
