Do I have to install NIS to get name service for ftp/telnet???
(This machine is pretty much just a single user box in which I
want some network access but won't be a server for anybody else.)

Check the file /etc/svc.conf. That file determines which naming services
are used in what order. To enable DNS, make sure it contains a line like
this:
hosts=local,bind

For most cases the bindsetup command will be enough to get your system setup
correctly, including this item.

:I'm trying to get some sort of name service to work with telnet
I suspect that all you'll have to do is edit the /etc/svc.conf file
and set "hosts=local,bind" or somesuch. man svc.conf(5)
