maximum length of username / login id

Hi all,

I'm about to start work on my first Compaq Alpha box running Unix (Tru
64 I think, but I could be wrong ... maybe OSF1). I'm being asked to
sort out some problems with user names / login IDs, especially to do
with length of these. I haven't got access to any manuals, so while
I'm searching the net, do any of you know what the maximum length of a
user name I can use is? E.g., when I run useradd -d <whatever dir>
username, what's the limit?
