Thanks
Thats a different request. Most people don't consider switching to CDE
(although I like CDE, but I've used VUE/CDE for so many years, I'm
quite used to it).
So, its not like there are any open-source software approaching CDE,
as much of the linux world turned their backs on it for costing money
and being closed, and its not exactly the most exciting interface
compared to desktop's now-a-days.
Xi Graphics used to sell DeXtop which was CDE ported to linux and
using their X server, but I find no mention of it now on their website.
I'd imagine the user base paying for CDE on linux would probably be
counted on one hand.
Other window machines you may like would be WindowMaker (GNU Openstep
based) or Blackbox (pretty basic, has some minimal window frame and
workspace components).
Fvwm or Xfce are typical substitutes; not very much like CDE, but
they can be made to look enough like it for some people's comfort.

Doug,
I've contacted Xi Graphics recently,
and their reply was
they are no longer shipping DeXtop GUI.
Event the updates page has gone from their FTP site.
That's a shame indeed.
Andrew.
OpenMotif probably includes mwm, which is like CDE's window manager
but without the toolbar or file typing/action mechanisms.
About 10 years ago, there used to be a toolbar clone by Matt Baron
called "panel". IIRC, it never did it beyond version 0.4something,
but it was perfectly usable. Maybe you'll still find it somewhere.

I think KDE and gnome are really desktop managers as opposed to Window
Managers.
They are probably more on the level of XDM , I think.
I think both KDE and Gnome have window managers included. But the
window manager
is only a small part of what KDE and Gnome do. I think.
And I recall there is a cde look alike out there for Linux, although I
haven't used it
since Suse 6.0 Red Hat 5, Slackware 3.3 .
