When CDE starts up, one of the first things that happens (after you have
logged in, and while the window manager is starting) is that it calls
dthello which, with suitable incantations in .dtprofile, can be made to
print out a Message of the Day, or other welcoming message.

What is does then is to open a special window in which it displays the
message. Meanwhile, it waits for the window manager to get going. As soon
as that happens it exits (and your message vanishes), and there you are
with CDE all running.

Long ago, when machines were much slower, that worked fine because it took
quite a while for the window manager to get going, giving you plenty of
time to read the message. But now, you get about three seconds at most,
and there seems no way to make it wait any longer.

So what can be done about it?
