I've installed pureftpd via the ports install and it won't start on
boot, despite being listed in /etc/rc.conf

rc.conf---*start*----------------------

ifconfig_ed0="DHCP"
ipv6_enable="YES"
hostname="hiddenmonster.microsuck.com"

saver="logo"
inetd_enable="YES"

xntpd_enable="YES"
xntpd_flags=="-c /etc/ntp.conf -p /var/run/ntpd.pid"

apache2_enable="YES"
mysql_enable="YES"
sshd_enable="YES"
pureftpd_enable="YES"

sendmail_enable="NO"

rc.conf---*end*------------------------------

For pureftpd if i run
#/usr/local/etc/rc.d/pure-ftpd.sh start

It starts fine, just not on boot.

comp.unix.bsd.freebsd is not widely propagated, so you won't
necessarily get much help here (in comp.unix.bsd.freebsd).
See http://www.freebsd.org/support.html for better ideas...

Sounds like you haven't updated your ports in a while.
I'm pretty sure this was fixed last fall:
