I find if I try to install perl things using the CPAN system, it
generally starts to try and install a later perl.

Since perl is part of the core FBSD install I presume this could be a
Bad Thing.

What is the true position with this, should I just let it install a
new perl, or should I give up on (automated) CPAN?

Well, not really. As long as everything keeps working, you'll be
alright. I've replaced my 'base-system' Perl with 5.6.1, and everything
still seems to be working. Just remember also to stick NOPERL=true into
make.conf(5), unless you want your next cvsup to go back to 5.005.

Well, a number of Perl-CPAN modules can be found in the ports tree.
Look for p5-[...] ports. Generally, a recent Perl won't hurt you
though.

Install the newer perl from the ports.

Look, it's bad enough I have two options here without dragging in
others!:-)

Don't the ports install a newer Perl in /usr/local, as opposed to
overwriting the one in the basesystem?

The ratio of time involved in work to time available for
work is usually about 0.6

Many perl modules are also in the ports -- in case you didnt know.

This is the clean (for FreeBSD) version of letting CPAN install
perl.

Yes, but you can choose which version you want to use with use.perl
script. And you can change it back again, too.

Have you upgraded CPAN individually? There's a known feature of earlier
versions that did, indeed, pull down all of Perl. Doing an 'install CPAN
/ reload cpan' fixes this - doing the 'install Bundle::CPAN' as
mentioned in CPAN itself will pull down the lot.

Since I've updated, the only thing I've come across that attempts the
Perl upgrade thing is Math::BigInt (though I'm sure there are others).

Hope that helps...
