We are trying to implement longer usernames for our email server. It
currently only works for 16 characters....has anyone implemented going to 32
characters?
Any help would be appreciated.

We are running :FreeBSD 4.6-RELEASE

Thanks in advance.

That might break other things. Why not use aliases for those folks who
simply must have a really long username?

This topic has been discussed extensively in the sendmail documentaion.
You do not need long user name to have long email address. Just create an
entry in the virtualuser file in sendmail

Then start reading about the "alias" functionality in sendmail.

Don't start using "unix-usernames" longer then 8 characters if
you care for compatibility and future readyness. And avoid
"international characters"

Make shure you have applied recent security fixes, at least 4.6.2 +
sendmail 8.12.9 is needed for saef operation.
