We have a problem: We are not allowed to run more than two (non-root)
sessions (windows) a time. We have changed maxlogins in
/etc/security/login.cfg, but that seems to have no effect. We use AIX 4.2.
Any suggestions?

Hakon,
Your problem is the number of user allowed by AIX .
Default for AIX is two users but you can change this by:

# smit <enter>

then select
"System Environments" <enter>
"Change/show number of licensed users" <enter>

In this menu you can change the number of users.
You will have to reboot the machine to validate this.

is it a aix user license issue? How many people is your aix licensed
for? with hpux the number of interfaces (ethernet, fddi, console, etc) is
licensed, not the number of logins. when you changed the number of
maxlogins did you have to recompile the kernel?

just trying to help.

second attempt ...

for what it is worth ... chlicense and lslicense are part of the
bos.sysmgt.loginlic fileset ... if you didn't install this fileset then
you won't be able to run them ... Bill

Shucks, you NEVER have to recompile the AIX kernel. Just run the
command "smit chlicense" to reset the max logins. You will need to reboot
to have the new limit take effect. BTW, you have paid for the extra licenses
you are trying to get, haven't you?
