I have a 40p (model 7020-02) running aix 4.1.5.0. I want to add in ide
controller to this, but can't. Aix just wont detect it. I have tried
both a 16 bit and a pci ide controller. With the pci controller, it
just doesn't boot. With a 16 bit one, it does boot, but still no isa
devices (I am checking for /dev/ide*). The isa+ide packages from aix
are installed.
Please help.

Before you buy.
Have you seen this work on other 40p's?
Is the adapter made for an rs/6000?
I have never heard of this for this model and don't believe it is
possible. This system simply won't recognize the adapter like an Intel PC
would. I think you'll have to stick with SCSI.
I am interested in seeing any other responses to this query.

Thanks for your reply.

No, I just have access to one 40p :)

No (again). It is a regular 16 bit isa ide card and a regular pci ide
card. But ide is ide and the system should recognize it. Besides, I
dont think the hardware has much to do with recognizing it. I think it
is Aix which has to recognize it if there are no hardware conflicts
etc. I am running Aix 4.1.5.0 and it does support ide. So I think I
should be able to add it :)
I just have 1 pci controller (an expertbus 769w). It has some jumpers
on it, but I dont have the docs about it. Can anyone help here as well?
I will try again with another isa ide controller and see what happens.
Will post the results here. In the meantime, any help/ideas are welcome.
I think IDE support was there for the early NT3, that IBM had plans for
supporting on this machine and Microsoft wrote drivers for in the NT
kernel.
Just my 2 cents worth.
** this is true. IDE controllers are stupid and you need to do more work to
configure them than a SCSI controller. Thru SMIT, you should be able to tell
AIX what IRQ and addresses to use. Thru the SMS diskette, you should be able
to set the adapter up.
There is a "Redbook" with a title like "Managing your 40p/43p Environment"
This redboodk has some suggested values for various ide adapters.
