On S822 and S822L there is a much easier way to reset the admin password.
No need to contact IBM, the floppy front panel thing on the front is all you need.
Pop it out, then
- Use function 02 to set the service coprocessor into manual mode, enabling functions 25 and 26
- Use function 25, click OK to reveal "25 00"
- Use function 26, click OK to reveal "26 00"
- You have now enabled the customer-extended functions (if you see "26 FF", just try again)
- Use function 73 (reset system), click OK to reveal "A170800B", click OK to "reveal 73"
- Click OK one last time
- Wait 5 minutes for reset to complete
- Once you see "01 PVM" etc, it was resetted
- Use function 02 to set the service coprocessor into manual mode
- Use function 3000 and 3001 to reveal ASMI IP address
- Now log in as admin/admin
- The menu will initially only show change password. the actual functionality is enabled after password has been changed.
Function 73 was added in 2014, I think.
I had never used these systems before and it took me a few hours of googling IBM docs to find this out.
It just feels so bizarre. This could be a capture-the-flag challenge of how to hack into a mainframe, honestly.
Sorry for the necropost, but I hope this helps someone.
