I picked up gnu.gcc-2.7.2.1.bff and I'm having devil of a time figuring
out how to install it. I have it in a directory /home/cgonter/install.

thanks

cd into the directory with the .bff file and run:
inutoc

This should built a table of contents that should be
found when you try smit install.

The installation instructions are given in the file "INSTALL.txt"
on the server http://www-frec.bull.com/.

Almost certainly you've fallen into a "gotcha". When you downloaded the
LPP it proposed a file name to store it in on your local disk. The file
name was "SAMBA-1.9.16.0.bff", which would lead any normal humain being
to think that the browser was going to de-compress it "on the fly".
Unfortunately I have yet to see any browser actually perform the decompression.

To check use the command "file SAMBA-1.9.16.0.bff". If it replies
"data or International Language text", then the file is actually GZIPed.

If the file command returns "backup/restore format file", then the LPP is
properly uncompressed, and the problem is much simpler - you must remove the
file ".toc" every time you add a new LPP to the directory. Smit doesn't
regenerate the .toc if it exists, since the file-system might be a CDROM.

Hope this helps
Ciaran
