I am trying to create a bootable mksysb to DVD-RAM media using UDF
format to an internal DVD-RAM (IBM, SCSI) drive and I am getting the
following error message:
Initializing mkcd log: /var/adm/ras/mkcd.log...
Verifying command parameters...
0512-399 mkcd: Unable to create UDF media.
Cleaning up...
umount: 0506-347 Cannot find anything to unmount.
Digging further into what is actually happening I have found the
following:
+ udfcreate -d /dev/cd0
+ 2> /dev/null
+ [ 47 -ne 0 ]
+ /usr/bin/tee -a /var/adm/ras/mkcd.log
+ /usr/bin/cat /tmp/.mkcd.tmp.msg
+ + /usr/bin/dspmsg -s 5 mksysb.cat 209 0512-399 mkcd: Unable to
create UDF media.\n
mesg=0512-399 mkcd: Unable to create UDF media.
+ log_print 0512-399 mkcd: Unable to create UDF media.
+ /usr/bin/tee -a /var/adm/ras/mkcd.log
+ echo 0512-399 mkcd: Unable to create UDF media.
0512-399 mkcd: Unable to create UDF media.
And yes, that is correct. udfcreate returns a non-zero exit code
indicating failure. Running 'udfcreate -d /dev6cd0' from the command
line results in:
/usr/sbin# udfcreate -d /dev/cd0
Can't open device : The input or output media is write-protected.
Format failed.
The input or output media is write-protected.
Can not create.
/usr/sbin# echo $?

Now, this is brand new DVD-RAM media (non-IBM, though) and it is the
4.7GB capacity, single sided, non-caddy version. I wonder how on earth
can it be write protected?
Any help would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks,

Hello.
I know those DVD media are of a special IBM-type, you can not use the
standard 4,7GB media for this DVD RAM. Sorry. Call IBM and get the
correct type description of the correct DVD media.

Thanks. In the meantime I have also contacted IBM, they are now
investigating the problem. About the media, IBM has informed me I
should use Type I DVD-RAM disks -- they never mentioned IBM-branded
only, though. We'll see, I'll keep you updated.
Thanks,

I presume from the Type I reference you have one of the p620/30/50 mediabay drives?

We have successfully used Panasonic Type II media (LM-AB120 series), and
Fujifilm Type II (25302047) cartridges with these drives. But the drive is very
slow to write (380KB/s) as the IBM firmware keeps the speed at 1x, even if the
cartridge has never been opened (contrary to DVD-Forum guidelines).
The double-sided 9.4GB cartridges were great for combining a bootable mksysb image on one side along
with the corresponding spot/lpp/rpm resources on the other. Only thing missing was a builtin
cartridge-flipper, avoiding a second trip to visit the machine.
The newer p5/i5 systems have switched to the notebook-type slimline DVD-RAM drives.

So looks like no more cartridge support. Those with Type-II libraries can just break the tab and
slide the disk out the front. Type-I owners might have a tougher time cracking the case to extract
their disks.. ;-) Since we are losing the benefits of the cartridge (100,000 write cycles), some
may want to consider switching to cheaper DVD-R/W media. (DVD+R/W is not supported by this drive)

It seems you were right. It is some sort of media issue. Certain
media-caddy(!)-drive-OS combinations are supported, while others are
not. I have found the disk kit that was shipped with the machine. The
kit has a Type II DVD-RAM test media which works perfectly. End of
story.
Thanks, Arne.
