When i installed the PTFs into the my E30 with AIX 4.1.5, do i need
to commit the software update? I heard that it is normally done in the
apllied state, but not commited. Can anyone tell me why? Thanks.

Hi,
I think that you should use apply ptf rather than commit if the base level
software has been installed.
If there is no base level software installed, it will commit automatically
even if u choose to apply it.

While IBM PTF's are usually flawless code (!), it is best to
install any software updates as applied and _not_ committed as
defined by installp. They can be committed later.

This makes removing the PTF's an easy process, whereas if they
were installed as committed, you might have to re-install back to your
pre-install backup (you do have a pre-install backup?!)

Installing as applied will take up more space in /usr as you should
also save replaced files until you commit the PTF's.

Once everything seems well and good (about 30 days) you can committ
the applied PTF's. You can use smit to manage installed software,
and commit software in the applied state. To put another PTF set on,
ALL previous PTF's must be in the committed state.

Hope that is helpful.

Regards, Jon
